Podemos launched its open primaries this Wednesday to choose joint candidacies for the upcoming general elections, a process to which it invited Frente Amplio to participate and in which, finally, only Irene Montero appears for the Presidency of the Government.
The party led by Irene Montero proposed these primaries some time ago as a way to try to build unitary candidacies with other left-wing forces, in a procedure in which all people who wished could participate, both to aspire to positions on the lists and to vote.
The number two of Podemos and MEP is, for now, the only person registered in the candidacy for the Presidency of the Government, although other processes to choose candidates in different electoral constituencies remain open.
Voting until Thursday and results on Friday 16
Voting will take place from this Wednesday until Thursday, October 15, at 11:59 p.m., and the results will be made public on Friday, October 16, starting at noon.
The calendar gains relevance because precisely that Friday night the deadline for registering electoral coalitions expires, and for the moment there is no agreement between Podemos and the four parties that make up the new Sumar coalition, now called Frente Amplio: Izquierda Unida (IU), Movimiento Sumar, Más Madrid and los comunes.
Ada Colau, willing to yield
Within this scenario, Frente Amplio reached an agreement to designate the former mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, as the head of the coalition's list, who this Wednesday stated that she is willing to step aside if that facilitates the incorporation of Podemos into the project.
The also former mayor has said that she is willing to yield and not be the candidate in order to integrate Podemos, in an attempt to bring positions closer before the deadline for registering electoral coalitions expires.
