The opposition leader, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, continues to champion the idea of an instrumental motion of no confidence. That is, he seeks the support of Junts and the PNV to form a Popular Party government and, according to sources from Génova, subsequently call elections.
This Tuesday, Feijóo was in Barcelona with Catalan businessmen, while last weekend Miguel Tellado visited Bilbao. These are maneuvers by the PP to try to get closer to the Basque and Catalan electorate, areas where the PP's results are very low.
On the one hand, Jordi Turull, general secretary of Junts, has invited Feijóo to meet with Carles Puigdemont in Waterloo. Asked by journalists whether he would attend that meeting, the popular leader replied: "Let's talk about serious things."
On the other hand, the PNV maintains its firm stance: it will not support a maneuver to overthrow the central government hand in hand with Vox. It is worth remembering that Santiago Abascal's party has advocated for the disappearance of the Basque group in Congress, a proposal that was rejected in the Lower House. Furthermore, sources close to Aitor Esteban confirm that there has been no negotiation with the PP of any kind.
Precisely today, the Government has called Feijóo "cynical" and has defined the instrumental motion proposal put forward by the populares as a "desperation" maneuver.
It is true that the Executive is going through one of its moments of greatest political weakness after the corruption scandals that directly or indirectly affect it. In this context, not only the PNV and Junts have distanced themselves from the PSOE, but also parties such as the BNG, Coalición Canaria, Podemos or ERC, as well as some sectors of the Government itself linked to Sumar.
The truth is that no one knows if the legislature will last until 2027, as the Executive maintains. However, it seems even more evident that, if Feijóo finally decides to present a motion of no confidence, the initiative is doomed to failure, at least for the moment.
