Investigated for being “spouse of the President of the Government”: Begoña Gómez's accusation against the controversial judge Peinado

The defense of Begoña Gómez has requested judge Juan Carlos Peinado the suspension of the judicial procedure until the Audiencia Provincial of Madrid resolves the pending appeals regarding the decision to send the case to a possible trial by popular jury. Likewise, this Thursday, Gómez's defense, in an appeal accessed by ‘Europa Press’, states that there is “lack of motivation” in the selection of a popular jury and that, “the only conclusion that can be drawn is that she is being investigated for being the spouse” of Pedro Sánchez.

In the same way, the defense lawyer, Antonio Camacho, has filed a brief in the court in which he maintains that the process should not continue until the challenges presented against different resolutions of the magistrate are clarified, according to the document accessed by ‘EFE’.

Among these appeals are the one filed by the Public Prosecutor's Office against the decision to transform the case to the jury procedure, as well as the complaint appeal filed by the defense itself against the order in which it was proposed to try Begoña Gómez and two other investigated parties by popular jury.

The Audiencia Provincial of Madrid had previously annulled a first decision in that regard, considering that there were no "conclusive and consistent indications", although subsequently the judge again issued a similar resolution that is now once again under review by the higher court.

In its brief, the defense argues that it is "manifestly inadvisable to proceed with the processing of the procedure while uncertainty persists regarding the validity and subsistence of the resolutions that support it", warning that advancing in the case could generate an "irreversible" procedural situation and an inefficient use of resources if the appeals are finally upheld.

Judge Peinado decided to close the investigation last April and propose sending Begoña Gómez to the dock before a popular jury for alleged crimes of influence peddling, embezzlement, corruption in business in the private sector, and misappropriation.
