Judge Juan Carlos Peinado has defended before the Provincial Court of Madrid the precautionary measures imposed on Begoña Gómez and has rejected that his resolutions questioned the professionalism of the agents in charge of her protection. In a letter sent to the court, the magistrate maintains that "in no way was it intended to offend or belittle" the work of the bodyguards when he raised the possibility that they could collaborate in an eventual escape.
Peinado's response comes after the appeal filed by the defense of Pedro Sánchez's wife against the withdrawal of her passport, the prohibition from leaving national territory, and the obligation to appear periodically before the court. In that document, the instructor clarifies that he never stated that this scenario was "probable or foreseeable," but merely contemplated it as a possibility.
Despite this clarification, the magistrate maintains the reasoning that supported the adoption of the precautionary measures. In his letter, he points out that the work of the bodyguards is carried out in a "selfless" and "exemplary" manner, but adds that this does not prevent individual actions contrary to legality from existing. As an argument, he recalls the existence of the Internal Affairs units within the State Security Forces and Corps, whose function is to investigate irregular behavior by agents when these occur.
