The Audiencia Nacional has ordered the sending of a letter rogatory to the United States to incorporate into the judicial procedure the content of the mobile phone of Venezuelan businessman Rodolfo Reyes, former partner of Plus Ultra, within the framework of the investigation led by judge José Luis Calama regarding the former President of the Government José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero for an alleged crime of influence peddling. The content of the phone is considered key in the case because it includes messages that supported the UDEF report that originated the investigation.
The order, to which 'elDiario.es' has had access, details that the device was seized in 2021 by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), although the information was not sent to Spain until March 2026 through international cooperation channels.
Judge Calama points out that the content has already “been used to date as an investigative element,” but emphasizes the need to regulate its formal incorporation into the process, since “it is necessary to determine the conditions of its eventual incorporation into the process to be able to be used, where appropriate, in the plenary, as a means of proof with full procedural effects,” in order to avoid future nullities.
The resolution frames the origin of the material in an international investigation opened in 2018 into a network of Venezuelan businessmen dedicated to money laundering, corruption, and asset concealment through complex financial structures. In that context, the analysis of the mobile revealed communications about fund movements, loans, and allegedly irregular payments after the businessman's detention in Miami in 2021, when his visa was revoked and he was returned to Panama.
