The National Court foresees that the former President of the Government Mariano Rajoy and the former Minister of Defense María Dolores de Cospedal and the former Minister of Interior Juan Ignacio Zoido testify as witnesses next April 23 in the trial for the Kitchen case, one of the most relevant parts of the so-called Villarejo case.
According to the scheduled calendar, the current Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, will also appear as a witness on May 11 before the court in charge of prosecuting this alleged parapolice plot.
The Kitchen case investigates the alleged illegal device launched from the Ministry of Interior during the Popular Party government to spy on the party's former treasurer Luis Bárcenas and steal compromising documentation for the party. The operation would have been carried out outside judicial control and with the use of reserved funds.
The summons of Rajoy and Cospedal as witnesses responds to their position at the top of the Executive and of the party at the time when the investigated events occurred. Both have denied on different occasions having knowledge of the so-called Operation Kitchen.
In this procedure are also accused, among others, the former Minister of the Interior Jorge Fernández Díaz and the former Secretary of State for Security Francisco Martínez, as well as several police commanders, in a case that seeks to clarify the allegedly irregular use of public resources for political purposes.
