The Prosecutor's Office is studying the possible opening of investigation proceedings for the death of Jesús de Miguel, the CD Tenerife footballer who died this Tuesday after the strong collision suffered during the match his team played on Monday against FC Andorra at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López stadium.
The Public Prosecutor's Office is awaiting the police report and medical reports to assess the facts and decide whether to initiate these proceedings, according to sources from the Prosecutor's Office consulted by Cadena SER. For its part, the Homicide group of the National Police has already opened an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the death.
Jesús de Miguel, 30, died at the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where he remained admitted to the intensive care unit. The club confirmed his death in a statement in which it conveyed its support to his family, loved ones, and all Tenerife fans.
The Prosecutor's Office awaits reports and the Police investigate
The Prosecutor's Office's decision is pending the documentation that investigators and medical services may send. Once received, it must examine its content and determine the appropriate steps. For the moment, the Public Prosecutor's Office is evaluating the opening of proceedings; it has not announced that it has initiated them.
The police investigation is also in an initial phase. Its actions should serve to clarify what happened during the match and gather the necessary information for the authorities to examine it.
The participation of the Homicide group responds to the investigation of the circumstances of a death and does not in itself imply that the existence of a crime or the responsibility of any person has been determined. Nor has a conclusion about the facts emerged so far.
The possible intervention of the Prosecutor's Office is known on a day of commotion for Tenerife and for Spanish football. The player's family has thanked the expressions of affection received and has asked for respect for their privacy.
The collision and farewell to the Tenerife striker
The incident occurred in the final minutes of the Second Division match played on Monday. Jesús de Miguel collided with Andorra's goalkeeper, Jesús Owono, as both went to contest a ball. The forward remained lying on the field and was attended to by medical services before being transferred to the hospital.
The match was suspended in added time, with a two-all draw on the scoreboard. The referee sent off Owono for the action; that sporting decision is part of what happened during the match and it is now up to investigations to clarify the circumstances of the death.
Tenerife reported during the early morning that their player's neurological condition had worsened. Hours later, the club announced his death and expressed the entity's pain over the loss of its forward.
"Broken with pain, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe this is true," CD Tenerife stated when announcing the death. In the same statement, it conveyed the family's request for "maximum respect for their privacy" at this time.
