The Second Vice President of the Government, Yolanda Díaz, has harshly charged against PP, Vox and Junts, whose proposals she has described as “classist and racist”, and has demanded that they do not overturn the Royal Decree-Law approved to strengthen tenant protection. The norm, which must be validated in Congress within a maximum period of 30 days, remains in force during that period, which opens a key window for its application.
The decree contemplates, among other measures, the possibility of extraordinarily extending rental contracts ending between March 21, 2026, and December 31, 2027. This extension can reach up to two additional years, with the aim of offering stability to tenants in a context of strong pressure on housing prices.
In this scenario, Díaz has made a direct call to citizens to exercise this right while the norm remains in force. “I ask citizens who are in these conditions to urge the extension,” she pointed out, insisting that this measure can be key to avoiding abrupt increases in rents.
The vice president has also warned of the consequences that the repeal of the decree would have if it does not achieve the necessary parliamentary support. As she explained, contracts could experience increases far above current limits: “They can revalue your contract not by 2%, but by 20%, by 30%, by 40% or up to 50%”, she warned, highlighting the impact this would have on thousands of households.
