The leader of the Popular Party (PP) and candidate for the Presidency of the Government, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has defended that, if a 16-year-old girl wants to abort, her parents should have "knowledge" of that decision, and has assured that, if he wins the general elections on November 29 and reaches the Palacio de la Moncloa, he will open that debate.
In an interview on Cadena SER, Alberto Núñez Feijóo has guaranteed that women in Spain will have the "best doctors and the best healthcare" if they decide to terminate the pregnancy, so that they "can exercise it in accordance with the laws of my country." "I guarantee it in public and private," he added, although he also stressed that he cannot "force a doctor" to perform an abortion.
Asked whether the PP will force 16 and 17-year-old girls to have their parents' permission to abort, the popular leader pointed out that his "personal opinion" is that they should have "their parents' knowledge," while defending that it is "a debate that is appropriate."
"Do you think a 16-year-old girl needs her parents' authorization to get a tattoo and does not need it to abort? Do you think a 16-year-old girl cannot drive a vehicle in my country and yet can abort?" Feijóo asked during the interview.
A "vital, transcendent and irreversible" decision
The president of the PP has insisted that the correct thing is for a minor of 16 years to "share with her parents a vital, transcendent and irreversible decision" such as abortion, and has predicted that, if she has the help of her family, there will probably be fewer pregnancy terminations.
In that context, he announced that, if he assumes the responsibility of governing, he will study how to approach this issue, and remarked: "Because I tell you, I am going to propose it."
Feijóo will put equality "within other ministries"
Feijó declared regarding the Ministry of Equality "No, I do not eliminate it, the minister who is in charge of Equality should be in charge of other things, not only Equality", stating that "the Minister of Equality cannot work from 8 to 3 and go to Valladolid by AVE to spend the afternoon".
Asked if he is a feminist, he declared "how am I going to think that a woman does not have the same rights as a man or how am I not going to accept that there is still a wage gap between women and men?".
Reform of the euthanasia law
Also asked about the Euthanasia Law, Alberto Núñez Feijóo admitted that dignified death is a concept he agrees with, but confirmed that, if he reaches Moncloa, he will reform that norm.
