Felipe González has demanded from the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, an early election after the outbreak of the so-called ‘Zapatero case’. “There should be elections, it’s the first time I’ve said it. There should be them this year”, the former head of the Executive assured during a meeting with Valencian business leaders.
In that same event, González has shown his concern about the implications of the case and has asked to respect the presumption of innocence of former president José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, whose indictment has generated a strong political impact. “It affects us as a country, as a party and as people, it really overwhelms me”, he pointed out, awaiting the evolution of the investigation.
The former president has also avoided supporting a no-confidence motion from the Partido Popular, which he has explicitly advised against in this context. Furthermore, he has ironized about Zapatero's alleged involvement in the investigated events, stating: “I don’t see him capable of setting up a financial engineering scheme like the one I’m seeing”.
Finally, González has warned about the institutional situation and has even questioned the Government's management of the political calendar, considering that a constitutional breach is occurring due to the absence of General State Budgets.
