Félix Bolaños gives his opinion on the amnesty law validated by the Constitutional and the CJEU: "What was their alternative, to keep fighting until when?"

The Minister of Justice, Presidency and Relations with the Courts, Félix Bolaños, has confirmed this Friday the ruling of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) that endorsed the amnesty law for the participants in the Procés and that states that the law is made to seek reconciliation between Spanish and Catalan society.

"Reconciliation has been achieved. What kind of reconciliation would it have been if these people had gone to prison? That would be seeking revenge, not bringing our country closer together. The tension of the procés came to affect families, friends, coworkers and penetrated the roots of Catalonia. The Government wants to resolve that crisis that occurred with policies," he stated, in an interview on Hoy por Hoy.. Bolaños also admitted that "the independentists made mistakes, violated the law and the Constitution," but defended "the responsibility to overcome that confrontation." In addition, he reproached PP and Vox for having "brought thousands of people to the streets by instilling fear."

He continued, asking: "What was their alternative, to keep fighting until when? Do they want to perpetuate the confrontation and the tension? They brought people to the streets by instilling fear, they fed them lies. Why don't they apologize for what they said about the amnesty law?" In addition, the Minister of Justice has called for "urgency" for the law to be applied and its effects deployed. "There are almost 400 people amnestied, but not the leaders of the Procés. The law has been validated by the Constitutional Court, by the ECJ, and now it is necessary for some appeals to be gathered and for it to be applied. It would be positive for Catalan and Spanish societies for it to be resolved as soon as possible. That it be resolved according to the law, the law is clear," he emphasized.

The interview continued, asserting: "People with a high legal knowledge have made an impeccable law, we did a detailed study to see that it was constitutional and we have achieved it. In Europe there have been more than 50 amnesties, it is evident that they fit within European law. All of them, moreover, have been to pacify political conflicts, that's what they are for."
