The former President of the Government José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero has reiterated this Saturday that the so-called national priority included in the government agreements between PP and Vox in Extremadura and Aragon “is not compatible with legality” and, furthermore, transmits “an anti-coexistence message”.

Zapatero has made these statements during the 16th Regional Congress of the PSOE of Extremadura, where Álvaro Sánchez Cotrina will be proclaimed new general secretary in replacement of Miguel Ángel Gallardo.

In his speech, the former president has addressed the concept of national priority and has underlined that in democracies like Spain, “with the Constitution and with immigration laws in hand, it is not possible to discriminate against foreign citizens” in the access to universal and social rights.

Likewise, he has defended that said approach “is contrary to the dignity of people, contrary to the Constitution, contrary to international treaties”. In this regard, he has added that, although PP and Vox support it, “it is not compatible with legality, so they should take that signature and throw it in the trash”, insisting that “it also sends an anti-coexistence message”.

Sánchez Cotrina opens the "hope"

Regarding the extraordinary congress of the Extremaduran PSOE, Zapatero has highlighted that “hope” opens with the election of Sánchez Cotrina, to whom he conveyed that “the day they elected you, they not only elected you general secretary of the PSOE of Extremadura, they elected you president of the Junta de Extremadura”.

“I was president at 43. I believe he will be before”, he affirmed, at the same time that he valued the “so clean confrontation” experienced in the primaries, since, in his opinion, that brings “strength” and “democratic tradition” to the party. He also highlighted the attitude of the candidate who was not elected, in reference to Soraya Vega.

Finally, Zapatero has celebrated that the party is “all united” after the internal process and has assured that Sánchez Cotrina “looks like a president”. Furthermore, he has encouraged him to exercise an opposition “different from the one they do”, that is “useful for Extremadura” and that allows, in the future, a government “of harmony and far from radicalisms”.
