The environmental organization Greenpeace has unfurled a large banner in Madrid's Puerta del Sol on which can be read “No to war”. The action was disseminated through a video published on its social networks, where several activists are seen rappelling down from the facade of one of the buildings located next to the Real Casa de Correos, seat of government of the Community of Madrid.
With this initiative, the organization aims to send a message to political leaders around the world to insist that "wars are never the solution" and demand that diplomatic channels be prioritized to resolve international conflicts.
Greenpeace has recovered with this action the slogan that mobilized millions of people during the protests against the invasion of Iraq in 2003, which President Pedro Sánchez would have already used when rejecting the use of the US bases in Rota (Cádiz) and Morón (Seville) in the military escalation with Iran. The organization denounces the “serious military escalation in the Middle East” after the attacks launched by the United States and Israel against Iran, which have rapidly spread throughout the region.
The entity has recalled that since the beginning of the offensive, last February 28, the bombings and missile attacks have caused thousands of civilian victims, among them deceased, injured or displaced persons, in addition to impacts on schools, hospitals, homes and civilian infrastructure.
The executive director of Greenpeace Spain and Portugal, Eva Saldaña, has stated that the organization "firmly" opposes war and militarized solutions for conflicts. According to her, military attacks and invasions "destabilize entire regions, multiply suffering, and cost the lives of innocent civilians".
Greenpeace also warns that the world is going through a “dangerous dynamic of military escalation”, in which multilateral mechanisms are weakened and an international policy based on force and geostrategic interests is imposed above the rights and security of people.
