The Ministry of Interior has extended for 15 more days the border controls for travelers from Italy at internal air and sea borders, a measure that will remain in effect until 24:00 on October 22, as stated in this Tuesday's Official State Gazette (BOE).

The department headed by Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska signed the extension last Thursday, October 1, which the BOE now formalizes, and it is the third extension of controls that began in Spain on August 8 due to "reasons of urgency and a serious threat to public order".

The decision by Interior was a response to the checks on travelers arriving from Spain decreed by the Italian Government after the entry of more than 72,000 people into Ceuta, measures that, according to the published text, remain in force.

Dates of successive extensions

In Spain, order INT/846/2026 agreed between August 8 and September 7 the temporary establishment of border controls with travelers from Italy. Subsequently, the rule was extended for the first time three days before expiring, on September 4, and was extended until September 22.

Later, and also before those restrictions concluded, Interior agreed to another extension, on September 16, which extended the controls until October 7. With the new decision published in the BOE, the validity is now extended until October 22.

Permanent review of the measure

As detailed in the official gazette, the extension must be permanently evaluated and will cease to be effective before the scheduled date when the threats that "motivated its adoption" disappear or when they can be effectively addressed by less restrictive measures.
