The ERC spokesperson in Congress, Gabriel Rufián, will begin a tour of public events on February 18 alongside leaders from the main parties to the left of the PSOE, as reported by laSexta Xplica. The first meeting will take place in Madrid and will feature the participation of Emilio Delgado, a representative from Más Madrid.
This act will be only the beginning of a series of meetings, since in recent weeks Rufián has maintained contacts with practically the entire political spectrum to the left of the Socialist Party. With these moves, the republican leader takes another step in his intention to promote a broad left-wing alliance for future electoral events.
The idea is not new. In an interview given last November to José Yélamo on laSexta Xplica, Rufián already openly defended the need to build a common progressive front. In his opinion, "it's what people are asking for," especially in the face of fear of a conservative political alternative. "To the left of the PSOE there is no defined space and, if forces are added or subtracted, the numbers don't add up," he stated then.
"It doesn't matter who leads it", reveals Rufián
Rufián raised the possibility of replicating at the state level understandings similar to those that could occur in Catalonia between Esquerra Republicana, the CUP, and the Comuns. In that sense, he wondered why an alliance between parties like Podemos, BNG, Bildu, or ERC could not exist in Spain
The ERC spokesperson also issued a clear warning: "If we don't agree, they will kill us separately". He defended that, above party discipline, a "moral obedience" must prevail and assured that his approach responds to what he perceives in the street, where, he said, a new political illusion is demanded, built from the sovereign left and not from "an office in Madrid"Asked about his possible leadership in that project, Rufián downplayed the personal issue. "It doesn't matter who leads it; the important thing is that it gets done," he said, although he admitted to having "little hope" that the initiative would materialize and acknowledged that he receives criticism every time he publicly defends this idea.
