In the presentation of the new sovereign fund Spain Grows, endowed with 10.5 billion euros, Pedro Sánchez spoke about Spain's economic growth and took the opportunity to mention that "we have less public debt than the United States." In this statement, he joked about the country governed by Donald Trump: "It's not a success either. The US economy is as it is."
This statement comes due to the tension between Donald Trump and the president of the government. Sánchez's recent rejection of nuclear rearmament in Europe has not sat well in Washington, who were not happy after his constant refusals to increase investment in weaponry and defense. At a time when the rest of the NATO countries have accepted and complied with the American president's inquiries, Sánchez tries to show alternatives to Donald Trump's leadership.
In the forum's presentation, Sánchez also mentions that the Spanish economy is stable and growing. After the peaks reached during the pandemic, all sectors are recovering, and he considers that Spain is a solvent country today. "We have a lower public deficit than the European Union average," states the president, who also mentioned having a lower risk premium than one of the major European economies, France.
"Ultimately, we are a stable country. Full of opportunities. With a clear economic policy regarding what the objectives are and what the tools are to achieve that competitiveness," states Sánchez.
