Pedro Sánchez ironizes about the luxury penthouse that surrounds Ayuso and accuses the PP of not demanding accountability: "She didn't like fruit, she likes penthouses"

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has ironized about the explanations offered by the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, in relation to the Chamberí penthouse, stating that “it has become clear that she doesn't really like fruit, she likes penthouses”.

The reference, made during the Festa de la Rosa of the PSC in Gavà (Barcelona), occurred at an event held together with the president of the Generalitat and socialist leader in Catalonia, Salvador Illa, in which Sánchez focused a good part of his speech on housing policy and on the explanations given by the Popular Party on this matter.

“Ayuso's penthouse policy”

In that context, the head of the Executive maintained that the PP's housing policy is based on “Ayuso's penthouse policy”, an expression with which he tried to summarize the controversy opened around the property and the version offered by the Madrid leader.

Sánchez also alluded to what he described as a slip of the tongue by the Madrid president when she spoke of “my public money”. According to him, it is not about “my public money”, but about “6 million euros” which, in his opinion, have been allocated to the “big penthouse”, a formulation with which he raised the critical tone against the operation and against the way in which the PP has managed the controversy.

The President of the Government added that the official version of the Popular Party on this episode is still unknown, despite the fact that, as he explained, different public interpretations have already occurred from within the conservative formation itself.

Different versions within the PP

During his speech, Sánchez stated that Ayuso considered the property as an official office, while the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, spoke of an official residence. From there, the president slipped a new irony by pointing out that only the position of former president José María Aznar remains to be known, whom he said could end up defining it as a “coworking”.

With that sequence of allusions, Sánchez tried to emphasize the lack of a unified explanation from the popular party, in a matter that has acquired a strong political charge and that has served the head of the Executive to confront the PP's discourse on housing and on the use of public resources.

The focus, according to Sánchez, is on Feijóo

The President of the Government stressed that the underlying debate is not only the content of the explanations about the penthouse, but why the PP does not demand Ayuso's resignation. In his opinion, this absence of internal reaction “exposes” Feijóo, whom he holds responsible for not taking a clear stance on a controversy that, according to his approach, directly affects the credibility of the main opposition party.
