Pedro Sánchez opens a new front against the Supreme Court: considers the precautionary paralysis of the vote on the 'grandchildren's law' "very serious"

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has described as "very serious" the decision of the Supreme Court (TS) to provisionally halt the vote of people already registered in the Electoral Census of Absent Residents (CERA) who obtained nationality through the so-called grandchildren's law.

During his speech at the Festa de la Rosa of the PSC, held in Gavà (Barcelona), Sánchez argued that this judicial move practically leaves some 400,000 Spaniards abroad without a vote, and stated that the resolution "undermines our democracy."

In this context, the head of the Executive has directly pointed to the Popular Party (PP) and Vox for having promoted the appeal, and has insisted that he does not share the decision of the high court, although he will respect what justice finally determines.

"The TS must resolve it, and I will not question a decision I do not share," said Pedro Sánchez, before adding that he will not forgive PP and Vox, "who were the ones who filed this appeal."

The law, in force since 2022

Sánchez recalled that the norm came into force in 2022 and that, since then, several regional elections and the general elections of 2023 have been held, without, he said, the right having expressed objections until now.

"The right never raised a problem until now, when Abascal and Vox demanded it," the President of the Government maintained.

Reproaches to the PP for different parliamentary votes

In his speech, the leader of the PSOE also reproached the PP for recognizing the right to nationality of the descendants of the Sephardim, for abstaining in the processing to recognize nationality and the right to vote for the Saharawis, and for voting against the so-called grandchildren's law.

"Is there anyone who understands it? Or is it that everything is understood and that's the problem? Well, I tell Abascal and Feijóo, Feijóo and Abascal, that the vote is protected and exercised," Pedro Sánchez remarked, in allusion to the president of Vox, Santiago Abascal, and the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo.
