José María Aznar has ruled out presenting a motion of no confidence against Pedro Sánchez if there are no real chances of success. The former President of the Government believes that the Spanish political situation is going through a moment of "collapse" and maintains that the solution is to call general elections "as soon as possible" so that citizens can decide at the polls.
In an interview with 'El Correo', Aznar has argued that there is no moral or political obligation for the Popular Party to register a motion of no confidence. In his opinion, this parliamentary instrument should only be used when there is a sufficient majority to carry forward a government alternative.
"Motions of no confidence, if presented, are to be won," said the former popular leader, who was even more forceful in assuring that he would not promote an initiative destined for failure. "I would not do a motion of no confidence because it is not going to be won. Period," he stated.
Aznar has interpreted the moves made this week by Alberto Núñez Feijóo as an attempt to check if there was sufficient support to promote a parliamentary alternative. As he pointed out, the leader of the PP has explored that possibility given the progressive worsening of the political situation.
The former president has also warned that the main problem is not only the alleged cases of corruption affecting the environment of the President of the Government and the PSOE, but the institutional deterioration that, in his opinion, Spain is suffering. For this reason, he has insisted that early elections would allow the current situation to be unblocked.
Looking ahead, Aznar has defended the need to build a broad majority that leads to a "strong and stable" Executive capable of facing the country's challenges. Although he has acknowledged that politics forces one to distinguish between the desirable and the possible, he has assured that he will continue to appeal to that majority until the last moment.
