Iván Redondo, former director of the Cabinet of the Presidency of the Government of Pedro Sánchez between 2018 and 2021, has revealed that the Partido Popular tried to incorporate him into its electoral strategy seven months before the general elections of July 23, 2023. The revelation appears in his book 'El Manual', where he reconstructs his political and personal trajectory.
According to Redondo, the approach occurred on December 21, 2022, when the PP was already led by Alberto Núñez Feijóo after the departure of Pablo Casado. “They wanted to win the general elections”, points out the consultant, although he finally decided to reject the proposal.
The former advisor of Pedro Sánchez frames this offer in a personal moment of recovery after a heart operation that forced him to leave La Moncloa in December 2020. “A matter of principles”, he states about his decision not to accept economic privileges after leaving office.
After his departure from the Government, Redondo explains that he returned to work as a freelancer and rebuilt his business structure from scratch. “It was time to start over”, he writes, resuming his activity in political consulting with his usual team.
In the book, he also analyzes the result of the 23J elections, where the PSOE managed to stay in power despite losing in popular vote. “Few votes are always many”, he highlights, underlining the key role of territories such as Navarra, Euskadi and Cataluña.
In his opinion, Feijóo “failed” in the political strategy by not avoiding the playing field proposed by his adversary. “Political intelligence consists of not falling into the rival's traps”, he maintains.
Redondo also reveals that he received another attempt to sign him, in this case from Yolanda Díaz for her project Sumar. In a meeting in March 2023, he assures that he warned her of the “serious error” of running without Podemos. “Without that engine, it would never work,” he conveyed to her.
The consultant describes that decision as “an authentic political suicide” and states that even then he perceived that the project would not reach the presidency of the Government. Even so, he describes the meeting as cordial and without subsequent consequences.
At the presentation of his book in Madrid, Redondo left open the door to his return to politics. “I am prepared to return if the moment comes,” he stated, highlighting his experience and knowledge of the State in a context he defines as one of “corrosion, discomfort, and anger”.
For now, he insists that his priority continues to be his consultancy, but he does not rule out returning to the front line. “I know the system and the country”, he concluded, making it clear that his role in Spanish politics might not have ended.
