The Congress of Deputies will debate this week a proposal from the Bloque Nacionalista Galego (BNG) that proposes a radical shift in Spanish defense policy. The Galician nationalist party will defend a motion for Spain to leave NATO, close the military bases used by the United States on national territory, and reverse the increase in military spending approved in recent years.
The initiative comes just months after the Chamber rejected a similar proposal promoted by Podemos to call a referendum on Spain's continued membership in the Atlantic Alliance and end the US military presence. On that occasion, PP, PSOE, Vox, PNV, Junts, and UPN voted against it.
In addition to leaving NATO, the BNG demands denouncing the bilateral agreements that allow the United States to operate from the Rota and Morón bases and prohibiting any North American military presence on Spanish soil. The party considers that the current defense policy responds to external interests and limits the country's strategic autonomy.
The motion also demands reversing all decisions that have increased military spending over the last two years and allocating those resources to social policies, public services, and productive investments. According to the Galician party, the Executive has embarked on an "arms race" incompatible with the social needs of the citizenry.
Among its demands is also the rejection of the planned cuts to the Common Agricultural Policy and fishing within the next European budgetary framework. The BNG denounces that part of these funds could be redirected to defense programs and arms purchases linked to the community rearmament plan.
The nationalist party also maintains that the Government has aligned itself with the strategies promoted by the United States and NATO, both in increasing military investment and in aid destined for Ukraine. With this initiative, the BNG seeks to reopen the debate on Spain's role in international military alliances and the destination of public resources dedicated to defense.
