The Minister of Housing and Urban Agenda, Isabel Rodríguez, has conveyed a message of “tranquility” to the tenants who requested the extension of their rental contracts before Congress struck down the decree. According to what she assured, these people “have been covered” by the temporary validity of the norm, despite its recent parliamentary repeal.
The decree lapsed after failing to pass the vote in Congress, with the rejection of PP, Junts and Vox. Even so, the minister has defended that the legal effects for those who had already requested the extension are maintained, appealing to the spirit of protection for access to housing that guided the measure promoted by the Government.
In statements to 'TVE', Rodríguez has acknowledged that a scenario of legal conflict could open up in some cases, but has shown confidence in the judicial response. “If it came to judicialization, we would have to litigate, but I understand that the courts will be in favor of the right to access housing,” he affirmed, underlining the social “philosophy” of the norm.
Furthermore, the minister has announced support measures for those affected, such as the activation of the phone 047 of the Ministry of Housing to resolve doubts and offer advice. “We are going to accompany you. You are not alone,” Rodríguez insisted, reiterating the Executive's commitment to tenants in the face of the uncertainty generated after the decree's fall.
