Pope Leo XIV has just arrived in Spain for an official visit that will last until June 12 and will have one of its most prominent moments on the 8th with his intervention in the Congress of Deputies. In this regard, from ‘ElConstitucional.es’ we have already advanced that the pontiff will take advantage of his stay in our country to vindicate the migration policies defended and promoted by the Government of Pedro Sánchez.

The Vatican has confirmed that the Pontiff will speak in the Congress of Deputies next June 8, an event in which, according to sources linked to the organization of the trip consulted by this newspaper, “he will explicitly endorse” positions close to those maintained by Sánchez's Executive on migratory matters, thus distancing himself from approaches such as the principle of “national priority” defended by agreements reached between PP and Vox in some territories of the country. This position coincides with that recently expressed by the Spanish Church and organizations such as Cáritas, which have rejected linking social assistance to people's origin.

In that vein, the spokesman for the Episcopal Conference, César García Magán, described “national priority” as a mere "slogan". "The Church does not move at the slogan level, neither this one nor any other, and even less so when on one side they want to annul, exclude or eliminate the other. In that, the Church has not been, is not, and never will be," he recently stated. He also criticized the proposals of some administrations to reduce aid destined for Cáritas, considering that they respond more to ideological approaches than to an analysis of social reality.

The trip also has a strong symbolic charge. As Yago de la Cierva, coordinator of the papal visit, explained to ‘ElConstitucional.es’, Leo XIV has decided to resume one of the great projects that remained pending after Francisco's death: making the migratory crisis in the Canary Islands visible. The previous Pontiff had expressed his intention to travel to the archipelago to put international focus on the Atlantic route, considered one of the most dangerous in the world.

After his visit to the Canary Islands, Leo XIV will travel to Barcelona to participate in the events linked to the culmination of the Tower of Jesus Christ of the Sagrada Familia and the centenary of Antoni Gaudí, currently in the process of beatification.
