The Transport Commission of the Congress approved this Tuesday an initiative by Sumar that seeks to “definitively paralyze” the remote tower project at Menorca airport and urges the construction of a new physical control tower at this infrastructure.
The non-legislative proposal was supported by PSOE, PP, BNG and ERC, while Junts chose to abstain and Vox voted against. The text obliges the Government to take the “appropriate measures” so that both Aena and Enaire carry out these actions at Menorca airport.
Minimum staff and criticism of the current tower's condition
In the initiative, to which Europa Press has had access, Sumar also proposes to “ensure the necessary minimum staff at Menorca Airport, both air traffic controllers and air navigation maintenance technicians, in accordance with the needs of the service and applicable regulations and rules.”
The party states in the explanatory memorandum that “it is clear that it is impossible for the remote tower project to function in a short period” and adds that the current tower, although Aena makes investments that are merely patches, has “serious structural problems” that worsen day by day, aggravating the situation, in addition to housing fiber cement (asbestos) panels, which advise its dismantling and subsequent demolition.
Therefore, Sumar urges the construction of a new physical tower, and warns that “not recognizing the serious current situation could end up causing operational problems that, on an island, could have tremendous social and economic repercussions.”
