The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has backed RTVE's decision not to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest due to Israel's presence in the competition. The head of the Executive has defended that it is a "coherent" decision to "stand up against injustice," since, in his opinion, "silence is not an option" in the face of "genocide."
Through his social media, Sánchez assured this Friday that "our commitment to human rights, to international legality, is also expressed through culture," in reference to Spain's absence from the festival. "We will do it with the conviction of being on the right side of history," he added, before remarking that Spain cannot remain "indifferent" to "what continues to happen in Gaza and Lebanon."
The president also recalled that Russia was "removed" from the festival when it "invaded Ukraine," a measure that, he pointed out, had Spain's support. "Those principles" must be applied equally "when we talk about Israel," he stated. "There cannot be double standards."
Sánchez also stressed that Spain has always been committed to Eurovision, a contest that, he said, was born to "precisely promote peace, to bring us closer and to celebrate the diversity of the European continent." In this regard, he highlighted that other countries such as Ireland, Iceland, the Netherlands, and Slovenia will also not attend the competition due to Israeli participation.
Finally, the head of the Executive pointed out that "many fans" have "distanced themselves" from the festival and has again defended the position adopted by the Government and RTVE, based on "coherence, responsibility, and humanity."
