The Catalan delegation of the Global Sumud Flotilla has begun its journey this Sunday from the port of Barcelona bound for Gaza, in a new mission that seeks to make visible and challenge the blockade on the Palestinian enclave. The departure, scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Sunday from the Moll de la Fusta, has gathered dozens of people who have come to bid farewell to the participants amidst applause and signs of support.
However, the weather conditions have forced a modification of the initial plan. According to the explanation by the member of the flotilla's steering committee, Thiago Ávila, the vessels will make a technical stop in a nearby port before continuing their route towards Italy, with the aim of avoiding risks derived from bad weather.
The initiative has in this edition a broader participation than in previous calls, with around 70 vessels from different countries and more than a thousand people involved. Among the participants are representatives of social and trade union organizations, as well as political figures such as Laura Campos.
During the days prior to the departure, the organizers have held various events in Barcelona, where they have denounced the situation in Gaza and have criticized the inaction of the international community. From the flotilla, they insist that their objective is to draw attention to the humanitarian crisis and to pressure for a more forceful response from governments.
