The heat will continue this Monday without giving respite in a good part of Spain, on a day in which the country will once again be meteorologically divided in two. While large areas of the south, the interior and the Mediterranean area face temperatures typical of mid-summer, the peninsular northwest will remain under the influence of a DANA that will leave locally strong storms, hail and intense wind gusts.

According to the forecast of the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), thermometers may reach 38 degrees in Badajoz and be around 37 in Sevilla, in a heat episode that continues to set records well above what is usual for the end of May. The atmosphere will be especially suffocating in the peninsular southwest, although it will also be strongly felt in the Ebro valley, inland areas and areas of Canarias.

A widespread and persistent heat episode

Maximum temperatures will remain at very high values in a large part of the territory, with few changes compared to previous days. In large areas of the country, 34 or 36 degrees will be easily exceeded, consolidating an anomalous heat episode for this time of year.

In Canarias, the thermal rise will be especially notable in the eastern islands, where the presence of calima will also be maintained, which will increase the sensation of mugginess. Episodes of suspended dust could also be recorded in points of the peninsular west.

Atmospheric stability will dominate a large part of the country during the first half of the day, with clear or partly cloudy skies in most of the Peninsula and Baleares, in a context clearly more typical of summer than spring.

Intense storms in the northwest due to the DANA

The other side of the weather will be concentrated in the peninsular northwest. Galicia, Asturias and the northwest of Castilla y León will once again be the areas most exposed to the instability associated with a DANA, which will favor the development of showers and storms from the afternoon.

AEMET warns that these phenomena may be locally strong, with the possibility of hail and very intense wind gusts. Although the main focus will be on the northwest, it is not ruled out that the stormy activity may reach other points of the Meseta Norte and areas of the Cordillera Cantábrica more irregularly.

During the first hours of the day, the sky will present intervals of medium and high clouds in these regions, but it will be with the diurnal heating when the atmosphere gains instability and the most active episodes are triggered.

Strong wind in areas of the south and the Estrecho

The wind will also have prominence in this day marked by contrasts. It will blow from east and south components in the Península, with moderate intensity on coasts of the Cantábrico and of the south, as well as in interior areas of Andalucía.

In the vicinity of the Estrecho, strong and even very strong gusts are expected, which could complicate the situation in exposed areas of the Gaditano coast. In the rest of the country, a light wind will prevail, although it will tend to intensify during the afternoon in the Ebro valley and the Meseta Sur.

The episode confirms the persistence of an unstable meteorological pattern in the northwest and of very intense heat in the rest of the country, in a dynamic that repeats day after day and that keeps España under an increasingly marked thermal contrast.
