The Congress of Deputies has assigned Javier Ortega Smith the parliamentary space left vacant by José Luis Ábalos after he left the socialist group and was charged in the 'Koldo case'. The former Vox leader will now occupy the seat and office used by the former minister during his time in the mixed group.
Ortega Smith's new location comes after the deputy requested to join the mixed group after leaving the Vox parliamentary group. The Congress Bureau approved this request last July 17, three months after the party decided to expel him. The move modifies the composition of the mixed group, which will now have nine members. Along with Ortega Smith, four Podemos deputies and representatives from Coalición Canaria, BNG, Unión del Pueblo Navarro (UP), and Compromís will remain.
In addition to occupying the seat that belonged to Ábalos in the zone known as the "chicken coop" of the hemicycle, Ortega Smith will also take over the office used by the former minister. Likewise, he is expected to serve as spokesperson for a parliamentary committee, although it has not yet been specified which one it will be.
