The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has published a list of recommendations for today, Wednesday, August 12, solar eclipse, for both pedestrians and drivers. For example, among them are, not driving with special glasses or the absolute prohibition of stopping the vehicle on shoulders or roadways to observe the eclipse. Given the event classified as a High Traffic Impact Event (EVAAT), the DGT has designed a road safety plan to prevent, monitor, and raise awareness among users, with a list of practical indications.

Some of these indications for this day are, avoid unnecessary travel if the eclipse can be observed in good conditions from the place of residence or a nearby municipality. They also recommend, planning long trips with enough anticipation if these are necessary, as well as checking the state of the roads, weather forecasts, and official information channels. Choosing from among the more than 360 authorized locations enabled by the autonomous communities is also on the list.

Regarding drivers, the DGT, prioritizes extreme attention at the wheel during the phenomenon, asking drivers to increase the safety distance, adapt their speed, not use phones or cameras at the wheel, nor the specific eclipse observation glasses, and to keep the low beam headlights on during the darkening phase. They also propose, organizing the return with the same caution as the departure, with the aim of it occurring in a staggered manner to decongest accesses and reduce the risk of accidents.

In relation to traffic surveillance, it will be carried out by the Traffic Management Centers distributed throughout the peninsula and supported by both the Air Means Unit and the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard. The Benemérita will be in charge of monitoring the routes to the observation sites and focusing both traffic and access for health services, in addition to carrying out preventive alcohol and drug controls and avoiding reckless parking on shoulders.
