The former president of the Congress of Deputies Meritxell Batet has assured that during the last two years she has not been able to follow the parliamentary sessions because, as she explained, "It hurt too much. It's all so ugly. There's so much verbal violence." She stated this in an interview granted to El Periódico.
In her statements, Batet has appealed to the need to reconnect citizens with politics and has criticized those strategies focused on personal attack, whose objective is "the destruction of the person, it cannot be, because it destroys the framework of coexistence and ends with the credibility of politics and that is devastating". A dynamic that, as she has indicated, causes her deep sadness.
Regarding the growing polarization in the chamber, he/she recalled that during his/her time leading the Lower House tried to foster a more constructive climate among the deputies, moving them away from the logic of opposing blocs. In this context, he/she emphasized: "Here we all praise the Transition, but we don't practice it."
Likewise, when referring to the current situation of Congress, he has pointed out that the Popular Party "is the main opposition party and has a very relevant role and, therefore, much responsibility in this matter".
Batet has lamented that, despite having abandoned the political front line in 2023, she continues to be the object of disqualifications in public. According to the former Speaker of Congress, on occasion these episodes occur even in the presence of her daughters, which she describes as especially unpleasant.
