Movimiento Sumar faces a period of internal reorganization and redefinition of its political roadmap after the resignation of the second vice-president of the Government, Yolanda Díaz, as the main electoral figure of the formation. In this context of transition, the party is preparing to convene its third general assembly, which will address the renewal of its governing bodies and the updating of its strategy, with the intention of strengthening its alliance with IU, Más Madrid and the Comuns.
In parallel to this process, the party's Organization Secretary, Laura Moreno, has left her position without waiting for the celebration of said assembly, as confirmed by sources from the formation to 'Europa Press'. Moreno had been appointed in April last year, after the party's second assembly, and has formalized her departure within the Coordinating Group, the highest governing body.
The leader communicated her decision on May 25 to the executive and made her resignation effective this Monday. Her departure comes at a time when she is preparing her reincorporation to teaching Language and Literature next September.
Provisionally, the functions of the Organization Secretariat will be assumed by Fabio Cortese, a member of the executive and the party's coordinator in Madrid, until new appointments are defined within the framework of the internal reorganization.
Since its foundation, Sumar has experienced several resignations in its leadership structure, including those of former MEP María Eugenia Rodríguez Palop and the writer Elizabeth Duval. To these is added Yolanda Díaz herself, who left the organic leadership after the last European elections, although she maintains her presence in the organization as a permanent guest.
The departure of Yolanda Díaz
The second vice-president of the Government and Minister of Labor and Social Economy, Yolanda Díaz, confirmed in an interview with 'Cadena SER', her initiative not to run as a candidate in the next general elections and to leave Congress at the end of the legislature.
During her intervention on the radio station, she expressed that politics should be "a transit station" and that she will "categorically" not be on "any list" for Congress. On the other hand, she confirmed that she will continue to be involved in the political sphere, looking out "for the common good". However, she clarified: "I want to have time for my private life and for my daughter Carmela."
Asked about her vision on the results of the upcoming elections, she affirmed that "they will win again" and stated that she would do "everything" possible to prevent Alberto Núñez Feijóo and Santiago Abascal from reaching Moncloa.
"A very thought-out step"
It was in February when Díaz announced that she would not run as a candidate in the next general elections and assured that it was "a very thought-out step".
She made the announcement through a post on her social network, Bluesky, in which she wrote: "I want to tell you something". This message was accompanied by a 3-page letter in which Díaz recalled all the social and labor advances she has achieved during her work in Pedro Sánchez's Government, the last of them, the increase in the Minimum Interprofessional Wage (SMI).
"I always had many reservations about the idea of being a candidate. Politics is hard, especially for women, but I don't regret having taken the step. I look back and I am proud of everything we have achieved collectively and always working to improve people's lives," she expressed.
Her writing concluded by clarifying that she will remain in charge of the Ministry of Labor until the end of the legislature: "I will continue to do so, but today I want to announce that I will not be a candidate in the next general elections of 2027. It is a very thought-out decision that I have communicated to my loved ones, to my entire political space, and to the President of the Government."
