The PP delegation in the European Parliament warns MEPs through a letter about the seriousness of the migratory crisis in Ceuta

Due to everything that has happened these last few days in Ceuta with the migrants, the Spanish delegation of the Popular Party in the European Parliament has sent a letter to all MEPs to warn of the seriousness of the crisis unleashed in Ceuta and Melilla after the massive and irregular entry of more than 60,000 people. In addition, it is estimated that around a hundred immigrants have lost their lives during these days.

In said letter, the Popular Party maintains that what happened in Ceuta and Melilla transcends a migratory crisis and constitutes a threat to the territorial integrity of Spain and to the credibility of the Schengen area. "Ceuta is not only a Spanish border; it is the external border of Europe," the MEPs emphasize in the letter.

Representing the 22 MEPs in the PP delegation, Esteban González Pons, denounces the response of the Government of Pedro Sánchez to this migratory crisis. Specifically, he recalls that the European Commission offered to reinforce its financial, technical and operational support to Spain, including the deployment of Frontex. In addition, he reproaches that the Spanish Executive has not responded to that offer while migratory pressure continues to increase. According to the Ministry of Interior of Spain, between January 1 and July 15, 2026, there were 2,991 irregular arrivals to Ceuta and Melilla, 140% more than in the same period of 2025.

The PP also does not forget to warn of the growing concern that the situation is generating among other Member States. According to the letter, governments such as those of Italy, Finland, Sweden, France, Denmark, Austria and the Czech Republic have expressed their concern about the consequences that this crisis may have for the functioning of the Schengen area. For this reason, 22 countries led by Italy and Denmark have questioned Spain's migration policy and demand common action led by the EU. They demand from the European Council and the Commission the reinforcement of Frontex's support and an effective EU cooperation policy with Morocco.

The letter also recalls that the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has demanded the immediate end of irregular entries into Ceuta and the return of those who have entered illegally, while the Polish Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, has defended that Spain adopt a firmer border policy to guarantee the protection of the external border of the Union.

In conclusion, the Spanish delegation of the EPP says that the instrumentalization of immigration as a tool of pressure against a Member State demands a coordinated European response and warns that what is at stake is not only Spain's sovereignty, but also the security of the Union's external borders and the survival of the Schengen area. Finally, outside the letter, the EPP Group has requested an urgent debate in the next plenary session of the European Parliament on the migratory crisis in Ceuta.
