The PSOE vindicates "decent pensions, security and tranquility" against the model of Feijóo and Abascal: "Cut, cut and destroy rights"

The Popular Party has started its pre-campaign for the general elections on November 29 by criticizing the pension system of Pedro Sánchez's Government and defending its own project. Likewise, Santiago Abascal's far-right Vox has maintained a discourse similar to that of the popular party. In this context, the PSOE states in a communiqué to which this newspaper has had access: “Feijóo and Abascal have one project: to cut, cut, and destroy rights.”

The PP spokesperson, Ester Muñoz, stated that the pension system “is going to burst” and that it needs to be changed, while the party leader asked for “sacrifices” if he comes to power. In response to these statements, the socialists reply: “We already know who will be the first ones Feijóo will ask for sacrifices: pensioners.”

The communiqué focuses one of its criticisms on the revaluation of pensions in line with the CPI. The PSOE argues that Feijóo is trying to turn an already existing measure into an electoral proposal: “Feijóo could spare himself the ridicule of presenting as an electoral proposal something that is already law: the annual revaluation of pensions in line with the CPI.”

The socialists also reproach the PP for its position on pension increases in recent years. “They have spent eight years not supporting increases and now they intend to sell as a promise what is already guaranteed,” they affirm.

For the PSOE, that promise does not erase the model it attributes to the popular party: “The PP is the party of 0.25%. That is their pension model.”

The revaluation and the pension reserve fund

Against the proposals of PP and Vox, the socialists vindicate the measures adopted during Pedro Sánchez's governments. “Against the PP and Vox's model of cuts, we have guaranteed by law the revaluation of pensions in line with the CPI,” the communiqué states.

The PSOE also highlights the increase in the Social Security reserve fund. As stated in the document, “We have raised the pension reserve fund from 5,000 million euros in 2018 to 20,000 million.” With these arguments, the socialists contrast their management with the “sacrifices” proposed by Feijóo: “While they talk about sacrifices, we protect pensions and strengthen the public system.”

“Pensioners have already made enough sacrifices”

The statement directs its final message to those who receive a pension and rejects that they should assume new efforts. “Pensioners have already made enough sacrifices throughout their lives. They don't need Feijóo to come and ask them for more,” the PSOE maintains.

The socialists defend that pensioners need “decent pensions, security, and tranquility” and conclude: “We strongly protect pensions. They want to cut them.”

Rebeca Torró accuses the PP of wanting to privatize the system

The PSOE's Organization Secretary, Rebeca Torró, has reinforced these criticisms in a message published on X, where she attributes a privatizing intention to the PP's reform proposals.

“Let it be clear: when the PP says that the pension system needs a reform, it talks about privatizing it, like its Vox partners,” Torró states.
