The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, reported this Tuesday an update on the balance of Spanish citizens affected by the double earthquake registered in Venezuela. According to the latest data provided by the Government, the number of deceased now amounts to 18 Spaniards, while 144 remain missing and another 12 have been located under the rubble.
The new figure represents an increase compared to that communicated on Monday, when 17 fatalities and 138 missing persons were counted.
Given the seriousness of the situation, Albares has announced the dispatch of an aircraft from the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) which will take off this Wednesday bound for Venezuela transporting a field hospital intended to reinforce healthcare assistance to those affected by the catastrophe.
The head of Foreign Affairs explained that it is a START (Emergency Aid and Response Technical Team) team, a medical unit specialized in humanitarian interventions that can be deployed in less than 72 hours to act in large-scale disaster and crisis scenarios.
Consular emergency lines remain active
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs maintains its call to Spanish citizens in Venezuela to use the enabled emergency channels. The department reminds that all consular assistance lines remain operational and that updated information can be consulted through the official profiles of the ministry and the Spanish Embassy in Caracas.

More than 2,000 international rescuers work in the area
Search and rescue operations continue with the participation of more than 2,000 specialists from 27 countries, coordinated by the UN, who are working to locate survivors trapped among the remains of collapsed buildings.
According to the latest official balance, the double earthquake has caused at least 1,719 deaths, in addition to 5,034 injured, 15,866 affected people and 855 affected properties. Among them, "189 suffered a total collapse".
Spanish deployment on the ground
Spain has reinforced its contribution to the international response with the deployment of 65 members of the Military Emergency Unit (UME), along with two engineers from the Army and eight canine units specialized in search and rescue.
Likewise, the Executive has mobilized essential supplies to support emergency tasks and maintains specialized personnel from the AECID in Venezuela, in charge of coordinating humanitarian actions and assistance to those affected by the catastrophe.
