The federal coordinator of Izquierda Unida (IU), Antonio Maíllo, has predicted in Lorca (Murcia) that the alternative left will recover in the polls, considering that the debate on housing and the social mobilization associated with this issue favor their political space.
Before holding a meeting with the municipal group and the local assembly of IU in the municipality, Maíllo stressed that this “political axis is very favorable to the left”, although he admitted that there is still no response “in terms of polls to that change in common sense”, in reference to the surveys published by different media that point to a decline in the political space of the alternative left with a view to the next elections.
The IU leader added that “there will be” such a reaction in the polls and assured that his organization will contribute to it so that PP and Vox, “just like in July 2023, will be slammed in the face and will not enter Moncloa now in November 26”.
Mobilization in the streets and institutional pressure
Maíllo defended that housing will be a central element in these elections and that this issue strengthens the left. “We need mobilization in the streets, we need votes at the ballot box and we need courage in institutions. And we have that courage, we have always shown it”, he claimed.
Along these lines, he maintained that his political space has been a differential element within the Government and has been key to promoting housing decrees with measures that, as he recalled, the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) three months ago “said were impossible”.
The federal coordinator of IU also valued the general strike of 11N, called to demand the right to housing, as a transversal mobilization. In his opinion, this strike “is not against anyone”, but to gain rights.
Furthermore, he expressed his emotion at the march held yesterday in several parts of the country in memory of Maricarmen, the 87-year-old woman who died in Madrid after being evicted from the apartment where she had lived for decades. “She died because of the vultures”, he concluded.
Municipalism, a key piece for IU in Lorca
Antonio Maíllo was accompanied by the councilor of IU-V in Lorca, Pedro Sosa, who framed the meeting within a day of municipalist work of special relevance. Sosa thanked the federal coordinator for visiting different towns in the Region of Murcia to, as he said, highlight “the importance of municipalism in national politics” and offer real alternatives to citizens.
The Lorca councilor announced that the party is already designing the plan for the next election, with a program “made by and for the people” and aimed at “building a country that some intend to destroy”. In this context, he expressed his confidence in obtaining “very good results”, assuring that the organization is managing to mobilize “what had not been mobilized before, which is the left”.
