The spokesperson for Sumar in Congress, Verónica Martínez Barbero, and the Secretary of State for Social Rights, Rosa Martínez, have formalized a joint candidacy with which they aspire to lead Movimiento Sumar. Barring a last-minute surprise, both will become the new leaders of the organization after the extraordinary assembly scheduled for next July 11.
For now, the proposal headed by both leaders is the only one registered for the party's leadership renewal process. The event will serve to redefine the formation's leadership in a context marked by internal tensions that have intensified in recent weeks.
The call comes after the departure of the until now Organization Secretary, Laura Moreno, whose resignation opened a new crisis within the party's structure. Moreno left her position on June 11 and accompanied her resignation with harsh criticism of the current leadership, led by Lara Hernández.
Although the period for submitting candidacies will remain open until next June 30, the organization had worked from the beginning with the intention of reaching a consensus list that would avoid an internal confrontation during the extraordinary congress.
Verónica Martínez's decision to take the step and opt for the leadership also represents a new chapter in the discrepancies that have shaken Movimiento Sumar during the last month. Various internal sources had placed her for weeks as one of the most prominent figures in the critical sector of the current coordinator.
With this joint candidacy, Movimiento Sumar seeks to close a stage of internal confrontations and face a new phase under a renewed leadership.
