Former President of the Government José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero is in Caracas this Friday to speak at a conference focused on peace and coexistence, to which he is attending after being invited by the interim president, Delcy Rodríguez.

Just as explained by the office of the former head of the Executive, Zapatero received last January 30 a formal invitation to join the “Program for Peace and Democratic Coexistence”, a commission promoted by Rodríguez.

The purpose of this forum, the same sources point out, is "to contribute to the necessary agreements that guarantee the achievement of that double purpose" and Zapatero's presence responds to the interest in him sharing his "opinions and experiences in promoting dialogue".

Dialogue and reconciliation with Venezuela

According to an investigation by 'ElConstitucional.es', sources from Miami, Caracas, and Madrid, the mediation of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero has been central to the transition process in Venezuela. His role would not have been limited to facilitating specific releases of political prisoners, but rather he would have contributed to articulating broader political agreements, including commitments to move towards a total amnesty and the consolidation of a political pact that allows for a transition towards an advanced democracy. The sources consulted indicate that Zapatero's intervention helped to create the conditions for the parties to accept these commitments and move from isolated actions to a more coordinated process of dialogue and negotiation that includes Maduro's departure, the reduction of tensions between Chavista and opposition leaders, and general amnesty for political prisoners
