Javier Bardem defends a "plural and progressive" Spain and claims a patriotism that "does not consist of imposing a single way of understanding the country"

Javier Bardem has responded to the criticism he received last week for attending the match between Spain and Austria without wearing the national team's jersey. After also watching the match between Spain and Portugal, the actor shared a photograph wearing the red jersey accompanied by an extensive message in which he advocates for an idea of patriotism based on plurality, equality, and democracy.

In his publication, Bardem assures that in Spain "we all fit" and defends a society that turns its diversity into "its greatest strength". "A Spain where all people, regardless of their origin, language, culture, sexual identity or beliefs, can feel part of a common project based on equality, social justice and mutual respect," he writes.

The actor also champions the values that, in his opinion, a progressive society represents, such as the defense of public health and education, access to decent housing, equality between women and men, and the protection of minorities. In this context, he maintains that "the most solid patriotism does not consist of imposing a single way of understanding the country, but in working so that all people can live with dignity, freedom, and equal opportunities."

The publication went viral in a few hours, accumulating thousands of 'likes' and messages of support. Among the most notable reactions was that of footballer Borja Iglesias, who commented "you are the fucking boss", while his partner, María Valero, wrote "Long live Spain where we all fit!". Actress Ana Wagener also joined the support, with a "Long live that Spain!"; actor Pedro Casablanc, who thanked his "lucidity and courage"; and El Mago Pop, who showed his support with a "How great you are, Javier".
