The world of cinema bids farewell to one of its most recognized figures.  Sam Neill, the New Zealand actor globally known for bringing paleontologist Alan Grant to life in Jurassic Park, passed away this Monday at the age of 78, as confirmed by his family through a statement released on their official channels.

The family explained that the actor's death occurred "suddenly and unexpectedly," although they wanted to highlight that the actor had managed to overcome the blood cancer he suffered from. "The loss has been sudden and unexpected, but mitigated by the fact that Sam had overcome cancer," states the communiqué, in which they also express gratitude for the expressions of affection received and request privacy to cope with the grief.

Neill passed away in a Sydney hospital surrounded by his family. Last April, he had publicly announced that he had recovered from stage 3 angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, which was diagnosed during the promotion of Jurassic World Dominion. During treatment, he stayed away from filming and used that period to write his autobiography, Did I Ever Tell You This?, published in 2023.

Throughout more than five decades of career, Sam Neill participated in numerous prestigious productions such as Dead CalmThe Hunt for Red OctoberMemoirs of an Invisible ManIn the Mouth of Madness or Sirens. However, it was Steven Spielberg who turned him into an international star by choosing him as the protagonist of Jurassic Park (1993), a role he later reprised in Jurassic Park III (2001) and Jurassic World: Dominion (2022).

In addition to his unforgettable participation in the dinosaur saga, Neill was part of the cast of The Piano, directed by Jane Campion, a film that won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1993. He was also nominated for the Emmys and the Golden Globes and was even a favorite to play James Bond, although the role ultimately went to Timothy Dalton.

Born as Nigel John Diarmaid Neill, the actor held New Zealand, British, and Irish nationalities and, in addition to his artistic career, owned the winery Two Paddocks, located in the Central Otago wine region. His passing marks the end of the career of one of the most beloved faces in international cinema and leaves a legacy marked by some of the most emblematic titles of recent decades.
