The love story between Rob Jetten, prime minister of the Países Bajos, and Nicolás Keenan, Argentine field hockey player, has captured the attention of the country and abroad for its inspiring and media component.
Jetten, 38 years old, is not only the first openly gay premier of the country and one of the youngest to hold the position, but also a public figure who has openly shared his personal life for years.
The relationship with Keenan —former Olympic player with participation in Tokio 2021 and París 2024 and the only athlete who publicly acknowledged his orientation in the Dutch league— began casually four years ago and has now become a widely commented story.
The couple announced their engagement at the end of 2024, as they have shared on social media. The Dutch prime minister Rob Jetten confessed that, despite always having said that he would not marry, it was he who proposed to his Argentine boyfriend, Nicolás Keenan. In addition, on a television program, Jetten shared details about the wedding plans: they plan to do it in Spain, and joked about the cultural differences: “I proposed to an Argentine, and then you call your mother-in-law to give her the news. From that moment on, you are no longer the owner of your own wedding.”
Despite recent homophobic episodes linked to sport, the presence of Keenan, who will assume the symbolic role of first gentleman of the Netherlands, and his visibility as the partner of a head of Government have been celebrated as a historic step in LGBTQ+ representation in European sport and politics.
