Guitarricadelafuente and Penélope Cruz have been nominated for the Gotham Awards in the United States, an event focused on independent cinema that will celebrate its 36th edition on November 30. The organization announced its nominations this Tuesday and placed both performers among the 25 names selected in the acting categories.
The Gotham Awards, organized by the Gotham Film & Media Institute in New York, recognize the main proposals of independent cinema and highlight both established figures and new talents. The gala has consolidated itself as one of the first events of the film awards season in the United States. Among its recent winners are Lily Gladstone and Charles Melton, awarded for their performances in 2023, and Colman Domingo, recognized in 2024.
The Spanish singer and actor is featured for La bola negra, by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, in the Breakthrough Performer category; Cruz competes for La invitación, by Olivia Wilde, for the Outstanding Supporting Performance award.
Guitarricadelafuente will compete with Adia, for Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother; India Amarteifio, for Clarissa; Colas Quignard, for La Gradiva, and Mason Reeves, for Josephine.
Penélope Cruz, for her part, appears alongside Tom Courtenay, for Queen at Sea; Esmé Creed-Miles, for Sense and Sensibility; Adam Driver, for Paper Tiger; Andrew Garfield, for Artificial; Skyler Gisondo, for Primetime; Sandra Hüller, for Fatherland; Kate O'Flynn, for Tender Loving Care; Tao Okamoto, for All of a Sudden, and Channing Tatum, for Josephine.
'La invitación' expands its weight in the race, although the award is still open
La invitación is not limited to Cruz's nomination. The film also opts for Best Feature and Best Adapted Screenplay, thus adding four nominations and placing itself among the most outstanding productions of this edition.
Olivia Wilde's film, starring a cast led by Seth Rogen, shares presence on the list with other contenders for the Gotham Audience Award, including Backrooms, by Kane Parsons; The drama, by Kristoffer Borgli; La invitación; Michael, by Antoine Fuqua; Obsession, by Curry Barker; Project Hail Mary, by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, and You Can See Everything, by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim.
The Black Ball, in addition to Guitarricadelafuente's candidacy, also aspires to that audience award. In total, the Gotham Awards have selected 42 feature films and 25 performances in 11 categories, with nominations chosen by committees made up of film critics, journalists, festival programmers, and film curators.
The winners, however, do not depend on these committees: the final word will fall to independent juries, who will resolve an edition in which Spanish cinema once again enters the international conversation, although the definitive result is still pending.
