Apple began on Monday, September 14, the rollout of iOS 27, the new version of the iPhone's operating system. The update arrives with design changes, new features, and different usability improvements, but also with a particularly relevant absence for European users: the new Siri AI will not be initially available in the European Union.

The company presented this new generation of Siri as one of the major novelties of its upcoming software cycle. The assistant incorporates a more advanced understanding of language and context, in addition to a greater capacity to interact with the device's applications.

However, iPhone and iPad users in the European Union will not be able to access these functions for now. Apple attributes the delay to obligations derived from the Digital Markets Act (DMA), while the European Commission has indicated that the decision not to offer Siri AI in the EU rests with the company itself.

What new features does the new Siri AI include?

The assistant's revamp represents one of the most important changes to Siri since its launch. Among its main functions is a greater capacity to maintain the context of conversations, so that it can understand references to previously performed actions without the user having to explain the entire situation again.

It will also be able to interact more deeply with different applications, connecting messaging, email, calendar, or file functions to perform certain tasks.

Another new feature will be the ability to analyze the user's personal information, such as conversations or emails, to extract the most important aspects or help prepare responses.

Added to this are new automation possibilities and a revamped interface, with a more visual Siri oriented towards offering information in a more contextual way.

iOS 27 does arrive in Spain with other new features

Although the new Siri AI remains, for now, outside of iPhones and iPads in the European Union, iOS 27 incorporates other artificial intelligence functions and numerous improvements that will be available to European users. The update arrives with design changes, new tools for native applications, and more customization possibilities.

One of the main novelties is the evolution of Apple Intelligence, which expands its functions in different sections of the system. Among them, Image Playground stands out, which improves image generation directly from the iPhone, as well as new photo editing tools capable of removing objects, enlarging an image by generating content using AI, or modifying its framing.

Artificial intelligence also gains prominence in Shortcuts. With iOS 27, the user can describe in natural language what they want to achieve, and the system is responsible for creating the corresponding shortcut, without the need to manually configure each of its actions.

AI is also integrated into Safari, which incorporates customizable notifications capable of alerting the user to certain changes, such as product availability or a price drop. In addition, it will be possible to create extensions using instructions in natural language.

Another of the most striking functions is related to the Passwords application. iOS 27 allows modifying several passwords automatically thanks to an AI capable of accessing the corresponding websites and performing the process, also generating new keys when necessary.

The system also introduces context-based suggestions in applications such as Calendar, Reminders, Messages, and Mail. In this way, certain actions can appear automatically when the system detects relevant information in a conversation or an email.

These functions are joined by the novelties of Visual Intelligence, which expands the possibilities of environment recognition. Among other functions, it allows obtaining information about certain foods or incorporating contact data into the agenda from a phone number detected with the camera.

More changes beyond artificial intelligence

iOS 27 is not limited to AI functions. The system also introduces new customization options for Liquid Glass, the visual language previously launched by Apple. Users will be able to adjust the transparency level of certain interface elements to adapt it to their preferences.

The Wallet application also receives a practical improvement: it now allows creating personalized passes for events that do not have native integration, expanding the possibilities of using the iPhone as a substitute for physical tickets and accreditations.

Another of the major renewed sections are the parental controls. Apple allows configuring specific accounts for minors linked to those of adults, setting usage limits, blocking applications and websites, and controlling download requests or access to certain content. Parents can also determine with whom their children can communicate through calls, FaceTime, and Messages, in addition to setting individual limits for certain applications and usage schedules.

Finally, iOS 27 comes with general performance and speed improvements. Apple has optimized different system processes to speed up actions such as opening applications or sending files via AirDrop.

Thus, although Siri AI is the big feature that users in the European Union will have to wait for, iOS 27 incorporates a wide set of new features that will be available in Spain and the rest of compatible European countries.

The new Siri will arrive on Mac in Europe

The situation changes when it comes to Apple computers. Siri AI will be available on European Macs compatible with macOS 27, as the regulatory obligations applied to iOS and iPadOS do not affect macOS in the same way.

This creates a striking situation for users who have several Apple devices: an updated Mac will be able to use certain capabilities of the new Siri AI that, for the moment, will not be available on the iPhone or iPad.

Apple and Brussels maintain their struggle

The delay of Siri AI is part of the increasingly tense relationship between Apple and the European Commission over the application of the Digital Markets Act. Apple argues that European regulatory demands can create risks for the security and privacy of its users. From Brussels, however, it has been argued that the DMA does not prevent the company from launching new features in European territory.

For now, Apple has not set a specific date for the arrival of Siri AI to iPhones and iPads in the European Union. Meanwhile, iOS 27 begins its rollout with many of its new features, but with one of the most anticipated functions out of reach for European users.
