The Studio Ghibli, the celebrated Japanese production company founded by Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, has been awarded the Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities 2026. The jury has highlighted its ability to create “a cultural bridge between people of different origins” and for transmitting values such as friendship, empathy and respect.

From the studio have emerged some of the most influential films of world animation, such as Mi vecino Totoro, El castillo ambulanteEl viaje de Chihiro or La tumba de las luciérnagas. Its work is characterized by the mix of realism, fantasy and a strong sensibility towards nature and childhood.

Founded in 1985 after the experience of its creators in the Japanese television industry, Ghibli has been responsible for titles that have transcended generations and borders. Its cinema has been recognized with two Academy Awards, in addition to important awards at festivals such as Berlin or Cannes.

The jury has also highlighted the importance of its female protagonists, described as “brave, complex and with great capacity for transformation”, one of the distinctive hallmarks of the studio.

The recognition adds to a long list of international awards and consolidates Ghibli as one of the great references of animation cinema worldwide, with a body of work that combines art, emotion, and reflection in each film.
