"The Sinners" Makes History, Leads Oscar 2026 Nominations with 16 Nods

Ryan Coogler's film breaks historical nomination records, while Spanish cinema shines with Sirat among the international contenders

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced this Thursday the list of nominees for the 2026 Oscars, with a historic milestone: the film Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler, has received 16 nominations, becoming the film with the most nominations in the history of the awards, surpassing the previous record of 14 shared by All About Eve (1950), Titanic (1997), and La La Land (2017).

With this momentum, The Sinners heads into the ceremony on March 15 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles as one of the major favorites, with aspirations in key categories such as Best Picture, Best Director (Ryan Coogler), Best Actor (Michael B. Jordan), and numerous technical categories.

Another highly notable film is One Battle After Another, by Paul Thomas Anderson, with 13 nominations, while titles such as Sentimental ValueSupreme Marty, and Frankenstein each garner nine nominations, and Hamnet achieves eight. 

Spanish presence at this edition is consolidated with *Sirat*, by **Oliver Laxe**, which has achieved **two nominations**: one in the category of **Best International Film** and another for **Best Sound**, competing with productions from around the world.

Within the acting nominations, the race for the Oscar for Best Actress includes names like Jessie Buckley (Hamnet), Rose Byrne, Kate Hudson, Renate Reinsve, and Emma Stone; while the list of candidates for Best Actor is headed by Michael B. Jordan, along with Timothée Chalamet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ethan Hawke, and Wagner Moura.

In addition, the newly introduced category of Best Casting Direction has brought together outstanding industry professionals, such as Francine Maisler for The Sinner or Nina Gold for Hamnet.The 98th edition of the Oscars promises to be one of the most competitive and diverse in recent years, with a mix of auteur cinema, international productions, and major commercial bets competing for the most coveted statuettes in world cinema.
