La 2 of RTVE will premiere next May 31 the program La gran aventura de la lengua española, a divulgative bet focused on the history, evolution and expansion of the Spanish language, the second most spoken language in the world by number of native speakers. The space will be hosted by journalist Iñaki Gabilondo and will air on Sundays at 8:30 PM, in addition to being available on RTVE Play.
The format, directed by Pepe Azpiroz and produced by RTVE in collaboration with Tarabilla 97, has the support of the Real Academia Española and a large group of language and literature specialists.
Throughout eight episodes, the program will review key moments in the history of Spanish: from its origin as an evolution of Latin in the north of the Iberian Peninsula, to its expansion during the Reconquista, the Siglo de Oro and the arrival in America after the voyage of Cristóbal Colón.
It will also address the creation of the Real Academia Española in the 18th century, the impact of wars and the disintegration of the colonial empire, as well as the influence of the generations of '98 and '27, the Civil War and censorship, and the rise of Hispanic American literature with authors such as Gabriel García Márquez, Julio Cortázar or Mario Vargas Llosa.
The program will include voices of renowned experts such as Luis García Montero, Álex Grijelmo, Soledad Puértolas, Antonio Muñoz Molina or Rosa Navarro Durán, among others, in addition to the participation of the director of the RAE, Santiago Muñoz Machado.
The narration will feature the voice-over of actress Juana Acosta and readings interpreted by figures such as José Sacristán, Blanca Portillo or Carlos Hipólito.
The space will also reflect on the current challenges of Spanish, such as the impact of spanglish, youth language, urban music or artificial intelligence, in a context where the language exceeds 600 million speakers worldwide.
