The program laSexta Xplica experienced an intense debate this Saturday around the tax system and its impact on economic activity, with the prominent intervention of Afra Blanco, who defended the structural role of taxes in society.

During her intervention, Blanco highlighted the private sector's dependence on the public sector with a blunt statement: “You wouldn't have your wonderful companies if it weren't for taxes,” in a speech in which she asked for respect in the exchange of opinions. Afra Blanco defended the role of taxes, questioning the idea that their benefit falls solely on the working class. “Let's see, when taxes are talked about, it's as if it's something that only the working class benefits from, do you realize? It's something they pay and the working class benefits,” she stated.

From there, she contrasted different perspectives between citizens and businesses: “We see the streetlights and we see that night turns into light and we can go for a walk. And what do you see? Customers. We see the roads without potholes and we can see the way to work or on Sundays we can go to the mountains to get some fresh air. What do you see? Logistics.”

Blanco continued with examples of essential public services: “We see in public classrooms that critical and free citizens emerge. What do you see? Qualified workers. We in public health, what do we see? Professionals who are going to cure us and heal us. What do you see? Workers who are going to reincorporate faster. We at the airport see the way out precisely to be able to get to know other cultures. What do you see? Tourists.”

Finally, she defended the economic impact of the tax system and questioned its rejection: “Have any of you taken out the calculator? Does it pay off not to have taxes? No.” Along these lines, she concluded that taxes not only sustain public services but also favor business activity: “Taxes are directly an indirect subsidy for your economic activity.”

Blanco concluded her intervention by defending that the tax burden largely falls on working citizens. “Those who are laying the groundwork for you to have your company and come to criticize taxes are the workers of Spain,” she declared in the televised debate.
