The debate on absenteeism reached Malas lenguas (La 1) this Tuesday after Alberto Núñez Feijóo defended the need to review temporary disability benefits. The leader of the PP assured that, if there is no agreement with unions and employers, he will promote changes because "Spain cannot dedicate 30,000 million to this".
After hearing his words, Esther Palomera launched a harsh criticism and asked citizens to take note of the proposal. "Citizens must take note of what is at risk in this country, which are labor rights, which took a lot to achieve and conquer," she stated. The journalist also recalled the labor reform approved during the last Popular Party Government and warned that "this is what is coming".
Palomera interpreted that Feijóo's proposal implies that "if one gets sick, what the Popular Party is proposing is that they do not collect their salary," something she defined as "a social conquest from many years ago." She also reproached the popular leader for focusing the debate on absenteeism and not on other labor problems: "He never bothers to talk about overtime worked and not paid, with which Spanish employers save 4,000 million a year in contributions and salaries."
For his part, Pepe Trigueros agreed to reject the proposal and described it as "a first-grade elementary school error." "If one is sick, they will have to continue collecting their salary," he defended, although he advocated strengthening inspection mechanisms to prevent possible fraud. In addition, he pointed out that the rise of teleworking allows some people to continue performing their work from home when their health condition makes it possible.
