Real Madrid has confirmed the re-election of Florentino Pérez as club president after a more contested election than expected, in which he defeated candidate Enrique Riquelme.
The electoral process was marked by controversy due to the challenge of more than 1,000 postal votes, which delayed the final count. Some of these votes were annulled due to formal irregularities, which added tension to an already close day.
Finally, the result gave Pérez the victory with a wider margin than the initial uncertainty of the campaign reflected, although lower than anticipated at the beginning of the process. Riquelme's candidacy, which managed to gather the necessary endorsements to run, had been gaining visibility in recent weeks with a critical discourse towards the club's management.
The campaign was also marked by sports and strategic promises from both candidates, in a context not free of controversy and strong internal debate among members. With this result, Florentino Pérez will continue at the helm of the entity in a new stage after a vote that evidenced the existence of a more consolidated opposition than expected.
