Movistar Plus+ presented this Thursday its new original fiction, Iruña 97, an action thriller set during the Sanfermines of 1997 that will feature Álvaro Cervantes and Clara Galle as main protagonists.
The platform has also released the first images from the filming and a promotional video that previews the keys to a story marked by police investigation, institutional tensions, and the historical context of the late 90s in Spain.
An investigation in the heart of Pamplona in 1997
The series is produced by Buendía Estudios Bizkaia in collaboration with Movistar Plus+ and is scheduled to begin filming on July 7, with an estimated duration of 15 weeks.
The plot is set in Pamplona during the San Fermín festivities, when an unidentified body appears at the foot of the city walls. Although authorities initially attribute it to an accident, municipal agent Amaia —played by Clara Galle— suspects from the first moment that it is a murder. To solve the case, she ends up collaborating with Julio, a national homicide police officer played by Álvaro Cervantes.
Two police officers, two worlds, and a fractured city
The cast is completed by actors such as Karra Elejalde, María Pujalte, Patxi Freytez, Josu Iriarte, Josean Bengoetxea, Itsaso Arana, Fernando Albizu, Ainhoa Santamaría, Miriam Rubio, and Paula Usero, among others.
The fiction presents the clash between two ways of understanding the law and society: Amaia, an Euskaldun municipal police officer, and Julio, a National Police agent from an affluent family. Both must join forces in a city where festive euphoria coexists with the political and social tension of the era.
A thriller with a historical background
Created by Natxo López, with a screenplay by Marina Parés and David Pérez Sañudo —who also serves as director—, the series delves into a key moment in recent Spanish history, marked by violence and the social commotion of the year in which the kidnapping of Miguel Ángel Blanco impacted the entire country.
With this proposal, Movistar Plus+ reinforces its commitment to genre fiction with a historical background, combining police investigation, drama, and political context in a high-impact narrative.
