The journalist Josep Ramoneda has expressed his concern about the position that, in his opinion, Europe is adopting towards the President of the United States, Donald Trump. During his intervention on Hoy por Hoy, on Cadena SER, he assured that the continent still does not exercise its own leadership and criticized European countries for attending meetings with the aim of pleasing the US president.

Ramoneda took as a starting point the headline of El País about the NATO summit, which stated that allied countries attended "with the aim of placating Trump". "Well, we are like this, we are not advancing. Europe does not achieve independence, authority, its own criteria capable of properly counteracting the United States," he lamented.

In that context, he defended the position of the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, considering that he maintains a differentiated stance from the rest of the European leaders. "Sánchez's dissenting voice is still necessary, as he is the only one who somehow behaves and demonstrates a certain capacity to confront Trump," he affirmed.

The analyst concluded by expressing his discouragement at the European Union's lack of political autonomy and resorted to a historical reference to express his discomfort. "What would General De Gaulle say if he came out of his grave? How horrible!" he exclaimed, before lamenting that Europe "is surrendering without the capacity to truly build a consistent position of its own", despite being, he recalled, "a world power".
